The place we’re vacationing has a large martial arts supply shop not too far away so we couldn’t pass up the chance to do a little shopping in person rather than from a catalog or web site.
Here’s the dilemma: I like the idea of supporting small, independent businesses but I also don’t want to pay more for weapons and other MA equipment than I have too. Anyone who has been involved with martial arts can tell you how pricey some of this stuff can be.
I passed up on a half dozen books I wanted because I knew I could purchase used copies thru Amazon for half the price. I also had to fight the urge to make a few weapons impulse purchases. It wasn’t easy.
Our young daughter saw a pair of carved wood nunchucks she really wanted. She has only used soft chucks up til now but has won a number of trophies and medals doing a nunchuck pattern. While I am concerned about her hurting herself with them, I think moving to real chucks will force her to move up to that next level of ability, she’ll just have to wear her helmet everytime she practices.
My wife got a few pairs of kung fu shoes. They may have been a little pricey in my opinion but ordering shoes that fit online can be hit or miss so it made sense to buy them at the store.
She was also eying a number of weapons including some tonfas and some steel fans but we decided to wait. She already has a bo which she is just learning and a pair of sais (something our school doesn’t teach until black belt).
We spent about a half hour there and made it out only having spent around $75. Overall, I think we showed remarkable restraint considering we were kid’s in the proverbial candy store.
